The first Armenian Church opened in Abu-Dhabi at the end of last year. It has been designed according to Armenian traditions and architectural style. The 2,475-square-meter building has three main structures placed in a U-shape. The main church building stands on the right and next to it in the centre stands the archbishopric. On the left is a building partially constructed of glass and decorated with the Armenian alphabet. A statue of Mesrop Mashtots, the theologist and linguist who founded the Armenian alphabet, lies ahead. In 2005, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed donated land to build the Armenian Church. Then project authors started gathering donations from the Armenian community in the UAE and Kuwait. Construction of Church began in 2012.
The Singapore "Changi Airport", which was named the world's best airport in 2014, started construction of new terminal. Known as "Project Jewel", the new terminal is going to recreate nature. Airport, relax and comfort are three words destined never to sit next to each other in the same sentence, but looking forward at the plans for this new terminal that could soon change. According to project authors in 2018 visitors can enjoy new little "paradise" in airport. The massive donut-like structure, constructed from steel-and-grass will be 10 stories, five above ground and five underground. Jewel Chandi's centerpiece will be Forest Valley, a five story garden with thousand of trees, ferns and shrubs. In the middle of the forest, will be the 40-meter-high Rain Vortex. On completion, it'll be the world's tallest indoor waterfall, according to the airport. At the night, the Rain Vortex will transform into a light and sound show. In the US$ 1.1 billion terminal will be 130-room-hotel, for visitors and passengers, retail areas, game-zone, restaurants and so on.
After two years of design development, Tokyo-based Shimizu Corporation just unveiled blueprints for the world's first underwater city that, by the construction company's estimates, could be completed in just a few decades at a cost of US$ 26 billion. Dubbed the "Ocean Spiral" the sustainably powered, Atlantis-like metropolis is the latest futuristic scheme proposed by Shimizu. Shimizu Corp.'s vision of the modern-day Atlantis is divided into three parts, with the underwater city contained in a 500 meters wide sphere that could house up to 5,000 residents and comprise mixed-use developments where people can live, work, and play. The spherical city floats at the surface of the sea, but can descend down a 15 kilometers long spiral pathway into the deeper depths during times of bad weather. The spiral pathway is connected to a research facility, which would excavate the seabed for precious metals and create energy for the city above using temperature differences in ocean water. "This is just a blueprint by our company, but we are aiming to develop the technology that would enable us to build an underwater living space," Shimizu spokesman Masataka Noguchi told the Wall Street Journal. Desalinated water would be created using hydraulic pressure and fish farms would be built around the structure. The proposal also mentions harnessing the power of microorganisms to convert carbon dioxide to methane energy. Although seemingly farfetched, Shimizu's proposal underscores fears of sea level rise and loss of habitable environments. The design was realized with help from University of Tokyo researchers, the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology and the government's Fisheries Research Agency. The Shimizu construction company estimates that the technology to implement the "Ocean Spiral" could be in place by 2030.
With its graveyards packed to capacity, the Italian city of Verona is planning to build the country's first high-rise cemetery, with space for 24 thousand graves stacked over 33 storeys. Council officials have given initial approval to plans submitted by Cielo Infinito - Infinite Sky - to build s futuristic tower topped by a chapel on the outskirts of the city where Shakespeare set Romeo and Juliet. For tomb with a view, customers can have their ashes stored, be buried in a coffin, or pick one of more than 2000 group chapels where family members can be interred together. A city spokesman said the idea had won support because Verona's main cemetery had been completely built around, and could no longer expand. No final decision has yet to be made, with a vote by all council members yet to be taken, he said. Although it will be Verona's tallest building, the spokesman said that it would be beyond the ring road and would not ruin the city's skyline. The spokesman said that a cash offer from Cielo Infinito for the land had helped to win officials round, as the council suffers funding cuts. "We tried to sell the land involved for US$ 932 thousand and had no takers, then this company came forward with an offer of US$ 14 million," he said. Last year a new vertical cemetery project introduced in Norway. In India, currently being built a vertical cemetery, which is called Moksha tower. Sheathed in scaffolding, the Capitol Dome looks less like a soaring symbol of American democracy these days than it does some giant Erector Set shining in the sun. That counts as progress, though, and officials announced on November 18 the next installment of a US$ 60 million repair is ready to begin. The 84 thousand of scaffolding pipe and two miles of decking will allow repair crews access to the dome at all levels, from the 36 columns at its base to the Statue of Freedom at its peak. Next, according to the Architect of the Capitol's website, 325 meters of cracked cast iron will be repaired, and more than a dozen layers of old paint removed. Decorative ornaments will be repaired or in some cases replaced. Then 1,215 gallons of paint will be applied in three coats - the last of which is "Dome White." The cast iron dome - actually a pair of them nestled inside one another and connected by cast iron braces - is more than 150 years old. The last restoration was completed in 1959 and 1960. Stephen T. Ayers, the Architect of the Capitol, told reporters invited to a rooftop news conference in cold, blustery weather than he hoped the current job would be good for 75 to 100 years. So far, he said, it is on schedule and on budget, and should be completed in time for the next presidential inaugural, on Jan. 20, 2017.
