Zaha Hadid Architects Begins Work on Mexico City’s “Highest Residential Tower”

Construction has begun on Zaha Hadid Architects' residential high-rise in the Mexican capital, set to become the city's tallest apartment building. The Bora Residential Tower is being built in Santa Fe, a major business district in the west of Mexico City. The 280 thousand square meters La Mexicana park lies adjacent as well as three universities and the regional offices of Fortune 500 firms including the likes of Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon. Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) was given a prime location for the building, beside the Mexicana park and in walking distance to schools, theatres, cafes and restaurants. It will also be near to the new Santa Fe Transit Hub, which will offer a quick connection to the city's metro network. As the area is suited to a range of potential buyers, like families, retirees and young professionals, the British firm designed the building with six different layouts, which are arranged as separate sections around the central circulation. The tallest of the sextet will have over 50 storeys – a feat that ZHA claims will make it the "highest residential tower in Mexico City". In total, the building will include 200 apartments of one, two and three bedrooms. Each will have two glazed sides to make the most of natural light and views to the surroundings. These will open onto private terraces so that residents can enjoy the mild, subtropical climate. Newly released renderings show that the balconies will have a triangular profile, and be offset from one another so as not to block light to levels below. The tower tapers inwards at the base, as the corner edge skirts out over 10 stories to form canopies over public space below. The multi-level space underneath will be occupied by restaurants and shops facing onto the street. Renderings show a glazed entrance, leading into an atrium with marble-like walls. The levels wrapping the space will be occupied by seating areas.

Former Home Of French Singer Edith Piaf Goes On The Market

A stunning home on the French Riviera that was once owned by Edith Piaf is on the market for almost US$ 5.25 million. She bought the four-bedroom property in Grasse on the French Riviera in the 1950s and lived there until her death from liver cancer in 1963, at the age of 47. The refurbished property on the south east coast of France is surrounded by countryside, being between the two pretty villages of Mougins and Valbonne. The grounds are extensive and include a tennis court, an outdoor swimming pool and a pool house. In addition, there are three separate guest suites and a two-bedroom guardian's cottage. The landscaped gardens include a lawn area with Mediterranean shrubs, mature trees and enough space for a helicopter to land. Inside of the property, there is a stone archway separating the kitchen and dining room, as well as exposed stone walls in the living area. There is pretty floor tiling throughout much of the house, with wooden ceiling beams and large doors opening out to the garden. Carlton International, the estate agents handling the sale, said: 'The property makes the perfect family home, ideal for entertaining.' It added: 'This was the former home of one of the most famous, internationally renowned french singers of the twentieth century. 'It is a stunning property in the heart of the countryside, enjoying complete quiet.' And buying agent Henry Pryor said: 'Properties with this history are always going to create a stir, especially on the French Riviera. 'The agent's problem won't be getting someone to view it, but holding back the tour buses who would like to see it.

China Built a Library Shaped Like a Giant Eye

Dutch firm MVRDV has built a public library that looks like a huge eye, as part of a new cultural district in Tianjin, China. The atrium of the Tianjin Binhai Public Library is deliberately designed to look like a 3D eyeball, staring out through the building's glazed façade, reported the Dezeen. The five-storey-high space is framed by floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, which are staggered at different levels to form the shape of an eye socket, while a spherical mirrored auditorium at the centre forms the pupil. The curving lines of the shelves provide areas where visitors can sit and read, and observe others doing the same. They also continue out across the glass facade, forming louvers that deflect the glare of the sun. MVRDV first revealed its designs for the Tianjin Binhai Public Library in June 2016, when construction was already well underway. It is one of five buildings commissioned by the Tianjin Urban Planning and Design Institute to form a new cultural centre for the Binhai district of the coastal city. The master plan for the area was set by German firm GMP – and MVRDV found it a struggle to fit the entire program into the allotted space. It was this that led the team to create the spherical auditorium at the centre. The 33,700-square-metre building is the Dutch firm's fastest project completion to date – with a period of just three years between the first sketch and the opening ceremony. Fast-tracking the process caused a few design headaches. The upper shelves directly above the atrium are currently unreachable, after planned access rooms were dropped – a decision MVRDV said was taken by the local team against their advice. As a result, these shelves are covered in perforated aluminum plates that printed to look like books. They are cleaned using a system of moveable scaffolding and ropes. The library also houses education facilities, which are located around the periphery of the interior and accessed via the main hall. Subterranean rooms hold a large archive and provide extra book storage. Reading areas for children and the elderly are located on the ground floor, with reading rooms and lounge areas on the first and second floors. The upper floors contain meeting rooms, offices, computer rooms and two rooftop terraces. Tianjin Binhai Public Library sits alongside building a new exhibition center by GMP, as well as other cultural buildings by Bernard Tschumi Architects, Bing Thom Architects and HH Design. All five are connected by a public corridor sheltered beneath a glass canopy.
