The new bridge named "Barekamutyun" (translated "Friendship" from the Armenian) will become a kind of symbol in the centuries-old friendship between Armenia and Georgia and will further strengthen neighbor’s good ties. Construction of the bridge is planned on the span of Debet River at Bagratashen-Sadakhlo border pass. The project will be implemented through a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The project is coordinated by the Armenian-Georgian intergovernmental commission. For the construction and design of the bridge on January 15 of this year, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technologies of RA signed an agreement with the Iranian company Ariana Tunnel Dam Co. To implement this project an international competition was held through the electronic platform of the bank. The Iranian company with price offer of 7,393,347.95 euros won the competition where 7 companies took part. The new bridge will be built to the left side of the old one and construction work should be completed by 2020. At present, the bridge construction in its design stage. It is planned to build separate structures for two directions. Each structure will consist of main bridge with a length of 160 meters with 5 spans (5x32) and two entrances with 2 spans (28+28). Each direction will have a road width 8.6 m consisting of two traffic lanes, two 1.5 m wide sidewalks and one 0.75 m sidewalk between the lanes. So, the total width of one direction will be 12.45 m. According to preliminary data, the height of the new bridge above the river’s level will be approximately 14 meters. After the commissioning of the new bridge the old one will remain as an alternative passage for various state delegations.

Reconstruction of 90 km long M6 Vanadzor-Alaverdi-Bagratashen interstate highway is to be completed in two phases. It is already one year that the project launched and now on many sections of the highway construction works are implemented. Vanadzor-Alaverdi stretch with 38.5 km length to be completed in the first phase of the project. This part also encompasses three tunnels and several bridges. The construction of the road section in Vanadzor city with the length of 6.6 km already completed and now is open for traffic. Reconstruction of 2 bridges out of 3 also was completed. The section of the road from Alaverdi to Bagratashen will be reconstructed during the second phase of the project. Works to start in spring 2018. The project financed with the support of European Investment Bank and Asian Bank, as well as co-financed from Armenian Government. The cost of the first phase of reconstruction is about 15 billion drams (around USD 31.5 million). The full project which passes through 33 communities will be finally commissioned in January 2020.

UAE-based Azizi Developments announced a plan to launch a new US$ 6.8 billion mega community project in the heart of Dubai, reported the Arabian Business. The new project, whose name is yet to be announced, will have a distinctly British feel, with themes and elements influenced by contemporary British culture and way of living, Azizi said in a statement. It added that the development will comprise residential, commercial and retail space, with 105 mid-rise and high-rise residential buildings boasting 30,000 apartments. The new Azizi project will be located in central Dubai with a construction area of nearly 3.1 million square meters and will include education facilities, retail outlets, hospitality, a shopping area and outdoor recreation spaces. Construction of the project is scheduled to begin in November and be completed before Expo 2020. “The rules and regulations in Dubai have provided an ideal environment for business growth, establishing the city as a preferred destination for trade and property investments,” Azizi added.

Some 2,000 years after they were first erected, Ancient Roman harbors made from concrete are still standing across Europe. Meanwhile, more modern constructions have proved far less durable. Finally, scientists have solved the puzzle of what made the ancient concrete so strong — and they think the discovery could make modern buildings more environmentally friendly. The results are published in American Mineralogist. Concrete used for ancient sea walls was made by mixing lime, seawater, volcanic ash and rock. Researchers have now discovered that elements in the ash react with sea water, which actually strengthens the material. Researchers discovered the Roman concrete contained aluminium tobermorite, a rare mineral that adds extra strength. When the Roman concrete was exposed to seawater, the tobermorite crystallised and spread. The researchers said that long-term exposure to sea water helped these crystals to continue growing, reinforcing the concrete and preventing cracks from developing.
