Thailand To Build One Of The World's Tallest Skyscrapers

Higher than a bird, almost as high as some planes. It's Super Tower. And it's coming to Bangkok. Real estate developer Grand Canal Land unveiled plans for a 125-storey office and hotel tower that would make Bangkok home to the tallest skyscraper in Southeast Asia. The 320 thousand square-meter "Super Tower" - the name is not final and a naming competition will be held later - is being designed by Architects 49. The mixed-use project will offer 90 thousand square meters of office space and house a "six-star" hotel with 260 rooms. Other amenities include an observation tower for tourists and garden on the rooftop of a lower floor. According to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, which maintains a database of the tallest skyscrapers, the Bangkok "Super Tower" will be the world's ninth tallest if it is built on schedule. It would be the third tallest if built today. The developer intends the tower as the center of a new business, shopping and residential district in Bangkok costing US$ 3.1 billion. If completed, the tower would dwarf the tallest building currently in Thailand, the "Baiyoke II tower", which tops out at 304 meters (328.4 m to tip) on its 85th floors. The second-tallest structure, to be completed in 2016, is Mahanakhon condominium at 314 meters. If built today, the tower would be the third-tallest in the world and the highest in the Southeast Asia region, planners said. Southeast Asia's current tallest building is the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur at 452 meters.

US$ 5.5 Billion For Thailand Main Airport Expansion

According to the Airports of Thailand (AoT) chairman Teerapol Noprampa, the executive board of AoT has approved a US$ 5.5 billion budget for the expansion of Suvarnabhumi airport, reported bangkokpost.com. The meeting agreed with the "single airport" concept favoured by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). It had approved a plan to expand Suvarnabhumi airport to enable it to handle 103 million people a year by 2024. The expansion plan is in three phases. The first stage, from 2013-2016, covers construction of a domestic passenger terminal, a third runway, car-park building for domestic passengers and internal linking road system. The projected cost is US$ 732 million. The second phase, from 2017-2020, is cost at US$ 1.47 billion and includes expansion of both domestic and foreign passenger terminals and the construction of a fourth runway. The third phase, from 2020-2024, with a total budget of US$ 3.30 billion, is for the construction of a fifth runway, additional passenger terminals and the expansion of car parking space. Mr Teerapol said the AoT plans to move its remaining services for domestic passengers at Don Mueang airport to Suvarnabhumi airport in 2016. Suvarnabhumi airport opened on October 2006 and by the end of 2007 the airport passenger traffic exceeded 40 million per year. In 2010 Suvarnabhumi airport took seventeenth place in the world by it's passenger traffic (more than 42 million per year) and fifth place in Asia, after Beijing, Tokyo, Honk-Kong and Dubai airports.

Eco-Luxury Housing In Bangkok

This high-rise 230 meter residential building contains 370 apartments located on 66 of its 69 floors. "The Met" - is a rare example of eco-luxury housing and due to open spaces "piercing" the building from the inside, it became possible to abandon the air-conditioning equipment, fully relying on natural ventilation. The project takes into account the tropical humid and hot climate of Bangkok and typical lack of open spaces and greenery in metropolises: the architects have provided all the apartments with landscaped terraces, in northern and southern fronts simultaneously, which also ensures additional coolness. Facades are decorated with ceramic tiles, wood and cloth - a tribute to traditional Thai architecture. A 50 000 Euros IHA (International Highrise Award) prize win the developer of The Met - Pebble Bay Company, who is planning to transfer this amount to Thai charity organization.
