Glass-Bottomed Sky Pool Will Be Built In London

Want a rush of adrenaline with your morning swim? Ballymore developers have unveiled an amazing transparent "sky pool" that'll make swimmers feel like they're floating through the air in London. Described as the "first of its kind in the world," the daring sky pool will be suspended 10-stories high between two apartment buildings in the Embassy Gardens development. The 25-meters-long swimming pool will be enclosed with 20 santimeter thick glass to give swimmers an unrivaled view of the streets of London 35 meters down below. Despite the sky pool's daredevil appearance, Ballymore says the pool has been granted planning permission and, like its renderings, will be entirely transparent and structure-free. The pool was designed by engineering firm Arup Associates with specialist advice from marine design engineers Eckersley O' Callaghan and aquarium designers Reynolds. The amazing structure will be developed as part of the HAL-designed 2,000-home Embassy Gardens in the new Nine Elms quarter that's currently under construction. The swimming pool will allow residents to swim between the two luxuries apartment buildings, which are both topped by sky decks with a bar, spa, orangery, and dramatic views of the Palace of Westminster. Residents who prefer not to swim can also get across via a footbridge. The proposed structure is 25 meters long, 5 meters wide, and nearly 3 meters deep, and was modeled after an aquarium. Sadly, not everyone will have the opportunity to swim through the air-units in the Embassy Gardens cost upwards of USD$ 944 thousand. The Embassy Gardens development is slated for completion in 2017.

China Set To Open World's Longest And Highest Glass-Bottom Bridge

China will soon finish construction on what will be the world's tallest and longest glass pedestrian bridge, floating 300 meters above a canyon in the Zhangjiajie National Park. Designed by Israeli architect, Haim Dotan, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge will be 380 meters long, 6 meters wide and feature a transparent glass floor. This extreme bridge aspires to become a "Wonder of the World" and continues the Chinese trend of delivering unique architecture that tests the limits of human ingenuity. The bridge will comprise two side steel beams, a structural glass deck, handrails and side suspension cables, with the capacity to hold up to 800 people at a time. The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge will also contain a bungee jumping spot and be used as a runway for fashion shows. Construction is expected to wrap up in July, with the bridge officially opening to the public in October 2015.

This Modern Stained Glass Window Doubles As A Solar Panel

For several years now, tech companies have been at work to develop clear solar panels that can double as windows, but the Current Window provides a gorgeous stained glass twist on that idea. Created by Dutch designer Marjan van Aubel, the window generates an electrical current by harvesting the energy created when sunlight hits a colored pigment-much like photosynthesis in a plant-and sends that power to a USB port in the window ledge. According to van Aubel, "The glass pieces are made of 'Dye Sensitised Solar Cells', which use the properties of colour to create an electrical current-just like photosynthesis in plants. Similarly to the various shades of green chlorophyll absorbing light, the coloured window panes harness energy." That energy can then be used to power small appliances; a USB port in the window ledge can charge a standard smart phone in about seven hours. But that's just with one relatively small window-the designer hopes that if replicated on a larger scale, say over the vast colorful facades of churches, or in schools, the Current Window could provide clean energy in a uniquely beautiful form on a much larger scale.

Eiffel Tower Gets Glass Floor In Paris

Visitors to the Eiffel Tower in Paris will now be able to look down through a vertigo-inducing glass floor that forms part of a US $38 million refit of France's most-visited tourist attraction. The transparent floor is on the first level of the tower, at 57 meters, where operators hope that visitors will linger before heading to the highest viewing platform at 276 meters above ground. Traditionally, tourists to the Eiffel Tower spend little time here before moving on to catch the better views from the two higher levels. To add more excitement to the view down to the ground, the old wire safety fence has been replaced by floor-to-ceiling glass barriers that tilt outwards. This project represented a technical exploit. Saint-Gobain had to develop a special product for the glass floor (128 square meters) and carry out very detailed studies bearing on the characteristics of the glass and the type of anti-skid coating to use. The floor had to remain as transparent as possible and the slip potential had to be minimized, which is why a pattern of dots (enamel and abrasive particles) was screen-printed on the upper surface of the glass. It took 18 months of R&D to conceive a high-quality screen printing process that would deliver excellent mechanical resistance and allow the product to keep looking attractive during use. Glassolutions, a Saint-Gobain subsidiary, developed and manufactured the 64 LITE-FLOOR XTRA GRIP glass tiles used for the floor. The tiles were made by laminating three sheets of glass with two high-strength films. The total thickness of this composite is 32 millimeters, giving it a load-bearing capacity of 500 kilogram/square meters. The refit of the half-hectare first floor, which began in May 2012 and was unveiled to the public Oct. 7, also includes shops, restaurants, and a museum telling the story of the 125-year-old construction. The tower's eco-friendliness has also improved, with the installation of four solar panels that will provide about half of the tower's hot-water requirements. Some of the toilets will also be operated using rainwater. About seven million people visit the Eiffel Tower each year - 85 percent of them foreigners - making it the world's busiest paid-for tourist attraction. The tower's management also hopes that the renovation will attract more Parisians to the "Dame en Fer" (The Iron Lady), as it is sometimes referred to in French. The tower opened in 1889 and was named after Gustave Eiffel, whose company engineered the project.
